On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing that the thirteen American colonies were free of British rule. John Adams wrote that the day should be celebrated with "Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other" - and fireworks have marked the Fourth since its first anniversary, in Philadelphia in 1777.
It has been a federal holiday since 1870.
