Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union Army troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the enslaved people of Texas were free - two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Celebrated for generations with gatherings, readings and food, it became a federal holiday in 2021, the first new one since Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The star on the Juneteenth flag stands for Texas, and the burst around it for a new beginning.
