Memorial Day, the last Monday of May, honors the members of the US armed forces who died in service. It began after the Civil War as Decoration Day, first kept on May 30, 1868, when the graves of the fallen were decorated with flowers; it has been the last Monday of May since 1971.
The red poppy worn in their memory comes from the First World War poem "In Flanders Fields". At 3 PM local time, Americans are asked to pause for a National Moment of Remembrance.
