Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is the month of fasting: from dawn to sunset Muslims go without food and drink, breaking the fast at sunset with iftar - traditionally with dates and water - and rising before dawn for suhoor.
The month begins with the sighting of the new crescent Moon, low in the west just after sunset, so its first day can differ by a day between countries; these dates follow Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar. The Islamic year follows the Moon and is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan comes earlier each year, through every season.
