St Patrick's Day, March 17, remembers Ireland's patron saint, a fifth-century missionary said to have used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. A public holiday in Ireland and Northern Ireland, it is celebrated wherever the Irish settled - with parades, music and green, from Dublin to New York, whose parade has marched since 1762, and Chicago, which dyes its river green.
