Makar Sankranti marks the day the Sun enters Makara, Capricorn, in the sidereal zodiac of Indian astronomy - one of the few Hindu festivals set by the Sun rather than the Moon, so it falls on January 14 or 15 every year. It celebrates the harvest and, by tradition, the Sun's journey north. In Gujarat and Rajasthan the sky fills with kites; in Tamil Nadu it is Pongal, in Punjab Lohri comes the night before, and sweets of sesame and jaggery are shared everywhere.
