Where they come from: Comet Tempel-Tuttle (55P/Tempel-Tuttle)

Dust from Comet Tempel-Tuttle, which comes round every 33 years. When Earth runs through a fresh trail just after the comet passes, the Leonids turn into storms, as in 1833, 1966 and 2001.

The estimate is how many you might really see from a dark spot here, allowing for how high the shower climbs and for moonlight. "Under a perfect sky" is the best case. The bar also counts the forecast cloud at the best time, so a clouded-out night sits at the bottom, as does rain on the radar now.

Usually modest, but about every 33 years it has produced the biggest meteor storms on record.
