Tsukimi - moon viewing - honors the moon of the fifteenth night of the eighth month of the old lunar calendar, by tradition the most beautiful of the year. People set out round white dumplings, tsukimi dango, and stems of susuki pampas grass, and sit out to admire the moon - in which Japanese folklore sees a rabbit pounding rice cakes. It is a custom, not a day off.
